The London Borough of Hillingdon Environmental and Consumer Protection Team are promoting a scheme called Healthy Choices, Healthy Hillingdon.
Who is the award for?The Award Scheme is open to all caterers*, from sandwich bars to schools, and restaurants, workplace restaurants to hotels. Caterers will be rewarded for promoting and providing healthy food choices within a healthy eating environment. What does it mean for the caterer? The award provides a level of recognition by the local authority of the high standards of food safety and healthy eating choices available to customers at the food premises. What do I need to have to achieve this? You will need to have a record of all the training received by your food handlers and a written food hazard analysis. You will need to have excellent food safety procedures in place and a suitable kitchen in a good condition with adequate equipment levels. You will have to actively promote a proportion of your menu options as healthy choices. Menu options must contain no added salt, must be low in fat or qualify as one or more portions of the five fruit or vegetable portions recommended for consumption each day. You must provide smoke free area. What does it mean to the customer?Customers are increasingly demanding they like to know that a restaurant is run well. An award gives confidence to the customer that the premises meets acceptable standards with a level of distinction. What we eat, drink and breathe... ...are major influences on our health.A balanced nutritious diet is essential for physical and mental well being. It is important that people have the choice of a variety of foods to obtain the range of nutrients that the body requires. The ability to access a healthy diet depends on many factors including what food is provided in schools, workplaces and by caterers. Caterers therefore have an increasing influence on the foods people eat. Keys to establishing good dietary habits are to control levels of saturated fat and salt to ensure that you eat enough fruit and vegetables each day. What we drinkMost of us don’t drink enough water. Did you know that it is recommended that adults drink at least 6-8 glasses of water daily ?
